Leisure centres to reopen next week

Wiltshire Council is delighted to confirm that all council-run leisure centres will reopen on 3 December.

Published 27 November 2020

Wiltshire Council has confirmed that all council-run leisure centres will reopen on Thursday 3 December, following the lifting of national restrictions on Wednesday 2 December.

The council's centres will reopen with the same facilities and services as before the national restrictions, which were brought in on 5 November.

The council is pleased to confirm that Amesbury Sports and Community Centre and the newly refurbished Calne Leisure Centre, now known as Calne Community Campus, will also be opening their doors. The teams there are looking forward to welcoming the local communities and supporting their health and fitness.

The health and safety of visitors, and the centre staff, will still be a priority. The measures introduced after reopening in August will still be in place. To manage the number of people at each centre at any given time, customers must book online in advance, and follow social distancing and increased hygiene measures.

Cllr Ian Blair-Pilling, Wiltshire Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, said:

We are delighted to be able to reopen our centres. Closing them for a second time has been a great loss for our communities, and our staff have been working hard to prepare to reopen once again.

We are delighted that the Amesbury Sports and Community Centre will be reopening for the first time since March, and the new Calne Community Campus will finally be able to open for the first time, after a delay due to the restrictions.

We are ensuring that all of our centres are taking all necessary precautions to ensure they reopen in the safest way possible, and our teams are looking forward to welcoming people back next week.

Let's all get going - I know our staff are keen to get to work with you again.

The opening hours for council-run centres from 3 December are available online and Christmas opening hours will also be released shortly.

Swimming lessons will resume on 3 December. However, lessons that had not yet returned to the programme prior to the national restrictions in November will not return immediately.

Gymnastics lessons will resume at Five Rivers on 3 December, start at Tidworth on 8 December, and start at Springfield and Marlborough in January.

Sports development activities including Healthier Communities, StreetGames and Walking Sports are scheduled to return from 7 December with appropriate social distancing measures in place. Existing participants will be contacted regarding their session in due course.

More details on the return of the leisure centre's group activity sessions including group exercise classes, indoor sports, Active Health and Get Wiltshire Walking programmes will be confirmed in due course.

Leisure centres run by Places Leisure on the council's behalf are scheduled to reopen on 2 December. Bookings for gym, swim and classes from the 3 December onwards are now available online on the Places Leisure website. Bookings will soon be available for 2 December.
