Activities and events for under fives
Rhyme times
Many libraries have rhyme times for babies and toddlers. These are free, friendly and fun sessions led by a member of library staff or a volunteer, where young children and their families share rhymes and actions. They are usually 30 minutes long and are a great way to help children develop early communication skills and interaction with other children, as well as being an opportunity for parents and carers to meet other families, too. Some sessions may be more suitable for babies, others for toddlers. For more information ask at your local library.
Bookstart Bear Club
The Bookstart Bear Club is a free club running in libraries that hold rhyme times. The club aims to encourage families with young children to join and visit the library on a regular basis. Bear Club members have their own special 'passport' and receive paw print stamps every time they visit the library, borrow a book or take part in an activity. Children collect certificates as the number of paw print stamps grow. The Bear Club is part of Bookstart (opens new window), a national programme that gifts books to all young children as babies and at three years old.
